The Banking Giant Demands Fingerprint or Eye Scans for Main Office Admission
The financial institution has informed staff members working at its new corporate base in New York that they have to provide their biometric data to gain entry the multi-billion structure.
Shift from Voluntary to Mandatory
The banking corporation had previously planned for the collection of physical identifiers at its recently opened skyscraper to be voluntary.
However, workers of the biggest American bank who have commenced employment at the main office since August have obtained communications stating that physical scan entry was now "compulsory".
Understanding the Biometric System
The new entry system requires personnel to submit their hand geometry to pass through entry points in the entrance area instead of scanning their ID badges.
Office Complex Information
The bank's headquarters, which reportedly cost three billion dollars to build, will in time function as a base for 10,000 employees once it is fully occupied later this year.
Security Rationale
The banking institution did not provide a statement but it is understood that the use of biometric data for entry is designed to make the facility more secure.
Alternative Access Methods
There are exceptions for some employees who will still be able to use a ID card for entry, although the standards for who will employ more traditional ID access remains undefined.
Complementary Digital Tools
In addition to the deployment of palm and eye scanners, the bank has also introduced the "Corporate Access" digital platform, which serves as a digital badge and hub for employee services.
The application permits employees to handle guest registration, use building layouts of the building and pre-order food from the building's multiple on-site dining vendors.
Security Context
The introduction of enhanced security measures comes as business organizations, especially those with major presence in the city, look to enhance safety following the attack of the CEO of one of the leading healthcare providers in recent months.
Brian Thompson, the head of the insurance giant, was fatally shot not far from the financial district.
Additional Office Considerations
It is unclear if the financial firm plans to implement the biometric system for personnel at its offices in other major financial centres, such as the UK capital.
Corporate Surveillance Context
The action comes within debate over the use of technology to observe staff by their companies, including observing physical presence metrics.
Earlier this year, all staff members on flexible arrangements were told they have to report to the workplace on a daily basis.
Leadership Viewpoint
The bank's chief executive, the financial executive, has described the company's new tower as a "impressive representation" of the company.
The executive, one of the global financial leaders, this week warned that the likelihood of the financial markets crashing was much more substantial than many financiers believed.
